10 Minute Timer

Counts down 10 minutes, with optional breaks. Ends at if you start now.

25:00

This is a ten-minute countdown that starts with one click and sounds an alarm when it finishes. It stays accurate in a background tab, because the end time is fixed at the moment you start and checked against your clock rather than counted out.

Ten minutes is the smallest unit that feels like time rather than a gap. It is the break in a 50/10 rhythm, long enough to leave the building and come back. It is also the standard bargain people make with themselves about a job they are dreading: ten minutes, then you can stop. Most of the time you do not stop, which is the point, and on the days you do you have still moved something.

What fits in 10 minutes

  • The break in a 50/10 work cycle, long enough to leave the desk properly
  • A ten-minute walk outside between two long blocks of screen work
  • Hard-boiling eggs, which land around nine to twelve minutes depending on the yolk
  • Ten minutes on a task you are avoiding, with permission to stop at the alarm
  • A short guided meditation, which is the default length most apps offer

As a pomodoro

The break half of 50/10. Ten minutes is the break most people move to once their focus blocks get longer than half an hour.

Four 50-minute sessions with 10-minute breaks, and a 20-minute long break after every 3, take 4 hours.

FAQ

Is ten minutes long enough to get anything done?

For a defined small task, yes: one email thread, one set of dishes, one page of notes. For anything that needs loading into your head first, no. Reading, writing and coding all spend several minutes just getting started, which is why they suit blocks of twenty-five minutes or more.

What is the ten-minute rule for procrastination?

Agree to work on the thing for ten minutes and allow yourself to quit when the alarm goes. Starting is usually the expensive part, and once you are in, stopping at ten feels worse than continuing. On the rare days you do stop, ten minutes of progress still beats none.

Is a ten-minute break too long between pomodoros?

After a 25-minute session it often is, since the pause starts to cost you the thread. After 50 minutes it is about right. Match the break to the block: five minutes for 25, ten for 50, and something longer after several sessions in a row.
